This series consists of correspondence, memorandums, legal papers, lists, and other records of John H. Connellan accumulated during almost twenty years working for the Office of Alien Property Custodian as an attorney in the Bureau of Law and the Division of Trusts and for the Alien Property Bureau as chief of the Division of Real Estate from 1934 to 1937. Included are copies of Connellan's correspondence with various units of the Office of Alien Property, correspondence concerning trust accounts of individuals, and Connellan's personal papers. Also included are memorandums to the Alien Property Custodian, legal papers concerning the property of draft evader Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, transcripts of court cases, records relating to the work of the Mixed Claims Commission, recommendations to allow or disallow claims under the Winslow Amendment (42 Stat. 1511) which permitted payments of claims up to $10,000, and lists of unsettled claims and remainder interests. The correspondence contains information of genealogical interest such as the dates of death of aliens, dates of birth of beneficiaries of estates, and ages of persons involved in litigation over claims. The records were maintained by the Alien Property Bureau and its predecessor.

Grover Cleveland Bergdoll (October 18, 1893 – January 27, 1966) was an early aviator, racing driver and World War I draft dodger, who went to Germany to avoid prison. Bergdoll was born in Philadelphia to a wealthy brewing family. He was one of 119 people to train at the Wright Flying School, and in 1912 he purchased a Wright Model B biplane for $5,000.
